Production at Teesside’s new UK Wood Recycling facility is gearing up as the Wilton 10 Biomass Boiler moves closer to being fully commissioned.
UK Wood Recycling (UKWR), which is based next to the Wilton International site at Redcar, was officially opened earlier this year by Lord Truscott, the Government’s Energy Minister. The company now employs 19 full-time staff, 16 of whom live within a five-mile radius of the site.
UKWR will supply 80,000 tonnes a year of biomass fuel, made from recycled wood, to the new Wilton 10 biomass boiler owned by SembCorp Utilities UK.
Over the past few weeks UKWR has been increasing its supply of fuel to the boiler while it has been undergoing its commissioning trials.
Gary Jones, Site Manager at UKWR, said: “This is a new business venture for UKWR and SembCorp and both companies have been working very closely together during the commissioning of the boiler to make sure everything goes smoothly.
“Both companies have made significant progress over recent weeks and we have streamlined our operations at both ends in preparation for the biomass boiler running at full capacity.”
Once Wilton 10 is fully operational, UKWR will produce 1,600 tonnes of biomass fuel every week.
The company is expecting to receive 100,000 tonnes of wood waste on to site in 2007. Increasingly much of this is coming from local authorities who are looking for more cost effective and environmentally friendly options to landfill for their low grade wood waste.
As well as the biomass fuel, UKWR will also produce a number of recycled products including equine, poultry and cattle bedding.
Wilton 10 is due to be fully operational this summer. It will generate around 30MW of electricity, enough to fuel 30,000 homes.
UK Wood Recycling Limited reduce the amount of wood being sent to landfill by recycling recovered wood to produce a range of products including horse, poultry and cattle bedding, equestrian surfaces and wood chip to fuel Wilton 10.
